Beach Parking Update: What Changed for North County Residents
Palm Beach County recently considered — and then partially reversed — a plan to charge for parking at 12 beachfront parks, including several right here in Jupiter, Tequesta, and Juno Beach. Here's a quick rundown of what happened.
The Proposal
The county had proposed charging parking fees at 12 beachfront parks (including DuBois, Carlin, Ocean Cay, and Jupiter Beach parks here in Jupiter, plus Juno Beach and Loggerhead) to help close a budget gap in the $2.2B county spending plan. The original plan: $4/hour for everyone, with a possible 20% resident discount under consideration.
What Changed
After more than 2,000 resident emails to Commissioner Marino's office, the county reversed course on July 14–15. Here's where things landed:
- County residents: Parking stays free (annual passes will be issued to verify residency — details on distribution still TBD)
- Non-county residents/visitors: $4/hour, starting October 1
- Roadside parking along A1A: Remains free regardless
The Budget Impact
The resident carve-out drops projected fee revenue from ~$10M to ~$3M annually, with the ~$4M gap covered by county reserves.
What's Next
Final budget adoption happens at County Commission hearings on September 3 and 15 — worth keeping an eye on if you visit these beaches often, own property nearby, or just want to see how it shakes out.
